Buxton Swimming & Fitness | PSDS Case Study

Energy & Sustainability

Parkwood Project Management is proud to be collaborating with High Peak Borough Council on a £1.4 million initiative aimed at enhancing energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions at Buxton Swimming Pool and Fitness Centre. With £1,281,500 secured from the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme, supplemented by an additional £175,000 from Council funds, this project represents a significant step towards environmental sustainability. Works are focused on removal of the primary source of pool water heat generation from conventional gas boilers to a state-of-the-art packages air source heat pump and solar panels. This transformation will not only improve energy efficiency but also contribute to a reduction of approximately 80% of CO2 emissions.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

In recent years, the imperative need to address climate change has been at the forefront of Parkwood Project Management’s forward thinking enterprise. As part of our commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility, PPM has been supporting its clients in funding and delivering decarbonisation initiatives. This case study of Buxton Swimming & Fitness Centre highlights our approach, and the impact of those initiatives.

THE PUBLIC SECTOR DECARBONISATION SCHEME (PSDS)

We commend the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) for launching the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS) through Salix in September 2020. This £1 billion initiative supported energy efficiency & heat decarbonisation projects in England’s public sector. For details and eligibility, visit www.salixfinance.co.uk. PPM & Parkwood Leisure support numerous Public Sector organisations in securing funding which contributes to a sustainable future.

Parkwood Project Management successfully implemented a comprehensive sustainability initiative at Buxton Swimming Pool & Fitness Centre, resulting in significant carbon emission reductions and substantial operating cost savings. With a focus on modernisation, Parkwood replaced the outdated heating system with cutting-edge, energy-efficient technology, reducing carbon emissions by 140 tonnes annually. Additionally, the installation of 131 solar panels on the pool hall roof now efficiently generates electricity to power various operations within the facility, further diminishing utility costs.

Buxton Swimming and Fitness Centre adjoins the historic Buxton Pavillion Gardens visitor attraction which is a superb example of Victorian Architecture. Nestled in the picturesque grounds, the buildings are located in a Conservation Area requiring any alterations to be undertaken in collaboration with local authority departments whilst adhering to relevant permissions. The scheme has been designed sympathetically, aimed at not detracting from the areas significant history and visual charm. Low profile solar PV roof mounting systems were deployed to reduce visual impact from ground level whilst still ensuring maximum generation output.

We replaced the existing fossil fuel heating system with bespoke packaged air source heat pumps (ASHP) solution. This technology is engineered and designed by Leisure Energy utilizing their significant expertise to provide an all in one solution assembled entirely off site within a modern engineering centre. This strategy not only reduces site installation time and construction period duration but allows for quality control to be far closely monitored in controlled environments.

This project represents a significant step for High Peaks Borough Council in reducing the carbon emissions across what are traditionally building assets with high utility consumption rates. PPM is pleased to be working in partnership with the Council in modernising the leisure facility to the benefit of the local communities and user groups.

Thomas Burbridge, Director of Parkwood Project Management says:

High Peak Borough Council, governing the district of High Peak in Derbyshire, operates from dual administrative sites in Buxton and Glossop. Situated in Buxton, the upgrade to the Swimming & Fitness Centre was delivered in A joint collaboration between the Council, Parkwood and PPM.

ENERGY SAVING MEASURES

Replacing conventional gas boilers with state-of-the-art air source heat pumps and installing solar panels, the Buxton Swimming Pool and Fitness Centre has enhanced its energy efficiency and reduced its environmental impact. These measures will significantly contribute to the Council’s target of carbon neutrality by 2030.
