Penzance Leisure Centre: A Modern Heating and Efficiency Upgrade

Penzance Leisure Centre

The Challenge: Keeping the Community Warm

Penzance Leisure Centre, a vital community hub with a main pool, learner pool, and air handling units, relied on aging, inefficient heating systems. The old boilers (dating back to 2005) and various pumps were due for complete replacement.

The biggest hurdle? This entire, critical upgrade had to be performed while the centre remained fully operational. We needed a plan that guaranteed minimal disruption to the public, no prolonged shutdowns, and seamless transition to new, temporary heating services during the works.

Our Solution: Efficiency, Precision, and Control

Our team, acting as both Principal Contractor and Principal Designer, delivered a comprehensive mechanical and electrical renovation to future-proof the facility:

  • New Energy Heart: We installed a new, high-efficiency Low-Temperature Hot Water (LTHW) boiler plant, replacing the old gas-fired units.
  • Smart Fluid Dynamics: All primary and secondary heating and hot water pumps were upgraded to modern, energy-saving models. We modified the entire heating distribution system to use variable speed control and high-precision Pressure Independent Control Valves (PICV). This means the system only uses the exact amount of energy needed, dramatically improving efficiency and comfort control.
  • System Longevity: To ensure the new plant operates reliably for years to come, we installed a new X-POT Compact side-stream filter to keep the heating water clean, replacing the outdated dosing equipment.
  • Digital Command: The entire system was linked to an upgraded, extensive Building Management System (BMS). We modernised the digital controllers, ensuring that the facility managers have total, intuitive control over the centre’s energy use and environment.

Key Outcomes: Reliability and Future Savings

The successful execution of this complex project delivered several key benefits to Penzance Leisure Centre:

  • Operational Continuity: Thanks to meticulous planning, including the use of temporary heating services, the centre experienced minimal disruption and no prolonged downtime, keeping the doors open to the community throughout the project.
  • Maximised Energy Efficiency: The new boilers, variable speed pumps, and precision PICV controls work together to achieve an optimal control strategy, significantly reducing energy consumption and operating costs.
  • Future-Ready Infrastructure: All new systems comply with the latest building regulations and health & safety standards, providing the client with a robust, reliable, and fully documented system designed for long-term performance.

This project delivered more than just new equipment; it provided Penzance Leisure Centre with a foundation for reliable service, significant cost savings, and a comfortable, future-ready environment for the community to enjoy for decades to come.
